Upcoming Sermon Series Graphics

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

I recently put together graphics for two different series of teachings coming up at Grace Gathering. The first one is a two-part series called Hospitality: How to Welcome Others and will begin on Sunday, September 26th. I thought the image of a golden door worked well to represent the rich blessings of hospitality. “…remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.” -Acts 20:35

A second teaching series will begin on October 1oth and is called Come and Follow Me: Engaging Jesus Through Luke’s Gospel.

Messy Illustration

There are all kinds of illustration styles out there; clean, messy, modern, retro, etc… I’ve been experimenting lately with taking photos of common objects, then hand-inking them in a “messy” sort of style, and then scanning, vectorizing, and coloring them. Above is the original picture of an old 3-IN-ONE can, followed by the the hand-inked version, and finally the vectorized/colored version.

Here are a few more random items I experimented with using the “messy style”.

The Beauty of “SimpliCity”

HUGO Create is a global design contest from HUGO fragrances by HUGO BOSS. 10 winners are selected each round. The theme for round 10 is “SimpliCity”. Here are the details:

Today’s world is a fairly complicated place, and this can make life pretty stressful. Get rid of the noise, stress, density, chaos, cost of living and limits of space and focus on the uncomplicated parts of city life. The quiet wilderness within the urban jungle. We want you to show us how you imagine an urban universe where the focus is on clarity, purity, freedom and beauty.

I chose to use a fun/simple illustration style to fit with the “SimpliCity” theme.

Acrylic Painting Flashback

goliath

Goliath [60" tall x 36" wide acrylic on canvas]

I do not consider myself to be a true “painter”, but once in a while I do get a burst of energy to put something on canvas. And for some reason, I like to paint big.  And I  usually build my own frames and stretch my own canvases. There’s just something about the satisfaction of putting the canvas together (not to mention the fact that it costs about 1/2 as much as buying a ready-made canvas).

I did these four paintings back in the Winter of  ‘06. They were all derived from photographs that I imported into Illustrator, vectorized, and minimized the layers into just a few colors. I then drew the images onto the canvas with pencil, mixed up the paint colors, and painted away. I still have one more blank canvas hanging on the wall in my office …waiting. Maybe I’ll get another burst of energy and put something on it someday.

I painted this portrait of the leader of the heroic Autobots back in October of 2006. I originally planned to paint Optimus Prime and Megatron as a set. However, poor Megatron has yet to find his way onto canvas. Here’s a look at the process…

The Office T-Shirt Contest

I couldn’t resist coming up with a design for The Office T-Shirt contest. Below is the actual dialogue from the 2006 episode that inspired the Classic Trans Am Vintage American Muscle design:

Andy: I saw your dork mobile in the parking lot. What does it get, like 4 miles to the gallon?

Dwight Schrute: Uh, try doubled that? Classic Trans Am vintage American muscle?

Andy: Yeah, my Xterra’s pretty sweet. Luxurious yet rugged. Leave it to the Japanese.

Dwight Schrute: Xterra isn’t even a real word.

Andy: Actually, it is. It’s Latin for “earth.”

Dwight Schrute: Oh, so you drive an Xearth? That makes sense. I’d rather drive a classic Trans Am than an “Xearth.”

Andy: Yeah, I bet you would. Oh, by the way, 1985 called. It wants its car back.

Dwight Schrute: Well I hope 1985 has a time machine because I drive an ‘87.

Andy: Oh, speaking of time machines, I just got back from the future and I went to your funeral, and guess what? Nobody came.

Dwight Schrute: Speaking of funerals, why don’t you go ahead and go die?

Andy: Oh, that was a really well-constructed sentence. You should be an English professor at “or not” University.

Dwight Schrute: Idiot.

Andy: If I were an idiot, I’d be driving a Trans Am.

Dwight Schrute: If you were driving a Trans Am, you would be the smartest idiot in the whole world.

Andy: *Coughs* An idiot.

Dwight Schrute: *Coughs* You’re the idiot.

Andy: *Coughs* Nice comeback.

Dwight Schrute: *Coughing* I was making fun of your comeback. That’s why it worked.
