Sixty-Six Clouds: Word Cloud Bible Website

Monday, July 19th, 2010

Back in April, 2009 I created a compilation of sixty-six word clouds representing the sixty-six books of the Bible. The project was quite a success  based on the amount of traffic and positive feedback the original blog post created. Now, a little over a year later I have launched a 66 Clouds website that is better organized and more interactive than the previous blog post. I am also in the process of collecting pre-orders for a 6″ x 9″, 144 page, perfect bound book containing all sixty-six word clouds. In addition to the book, 11″ wide x 17″ tall posters of each word cloud are available. So be sure to check out the new website and get in touch if you are interested in purchasing either the book or posters.

66clouds

*UPDATED 7/19/10: Check out the new Sixty-Six Clouds website.

Sixty-Six Clouds is a visual exploration of word frequency in the Bible. Each book of the Bible was individually imported into www.wordle.net to create a unique word cloud for all sixty-six books. The significance of word clouds is that they quickly present the gist of large bodies of written materials at a glance. Wordle gives greater prominence and size to words that appear more frequently in the source text. Therefore, the larger the word is in the cloud, the more prominent it is in the text. Within Wordle, clouds can be adjusted with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The original source text was the New International Version of the Bible. However,  the word limit was set at 150 and many common words (and, the, of, a, etc.) and all numbers were meticulously filtered out of the text before it was imported into Wordle. The exact same parameters were used for all sixty-six books of the Bible to give Sixty-Six Clouds a consistent style and appearance. Sixty-Six Clouds attributes all images to http://www.wordle.net/. You can also visit www.identity33.com/66clouds for a categorized and interactive view of all the word clouds.
